EXPOSING The Deception of Nigeria’s “Higher Education” System

While tuition fees are rising, the value of education itself is becoming questionable and more Teens want to be Tik Tokers and YouTubers instead of doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.

Many young Nigerians did not understand the real cost of higher education and are misled by Nigerian elders, society and peer group who choose to continue in a system that is not in their best interest or in someone else’s best interest.

Later on, you see people your age or younger making money from tiktok and other social media platforms or even tech and feel like you, by wanting to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc are missing out, going to end up poor or have made a very big mistake in career choices.

The truth is that YOU HAVE NOT. You are just being fed the right information from the wrong time, making you feel like the world is leaving you behind.... which it is.

While people may mean well and want the best for their kids or friends. They ignore the fact that the current educational system is an outdated one.

What worked for them , in the old days( before the internet) may not be suitable for their kids born in the modern age(post internet) where doctors, lawyers can Also be YouTubers or just not broke.

Let’s breaks down the deception within the system:

1. The Actual Cost of Knowledge vs. School Fees

The quality of education Is not proportional to the fees. Many universities charge high tuition fees, yet students face underfunded libraries, outdated curricula, and poorly trained lecturers.

The worst part is that Knowledge is not guaranteed. A degree does not equal competence. Many graduates lack the skills required for the job market, making their expensive education almost worthless.

2. How Nigerians Are Misled About School Fees and Education Costs

Society has conditioned people to believe that having a degree is the ultimate goal, regardless of what is learned in the process. Employers in Nigeria also prioritize certificates and age over actual skills, reinforcing a system where people pay for papers, not knowledge.

Parents, despite knowing the high costs and low returns, still push their children into universities out of pride or fear of societal judgment... It's also the only way people get rich.
3. Why Some People Continue Despite

For those who Know It’s Not in Their Best Interest
A. They believe that without a degree, they have no future, even when reality suggests otherwise.

B. Parents and communities impose expectations on them, making it difficult for them to explore other paths.

C. Even when they understand the system is flawed, they may not know about or fear alternative ways of gaining knowledge and building a career.

D. The Nigerian education system is designed to benefit the elite while keeping the masses paying for substandard education.

4. Who Benefits from This System?

If education is failing students, who is profiting?

A. Universities and school administrators that keep increasing tuition fees even when the quality does not improve.

B. The government who avoids investing in real skill development and entrepreneurship programs to divert resources.

C. Parents and elders who want societal validation and pride from their child having a degree.

D. Businesses that exploit graduates’ desperation, offering low wages.

To break free from this misleading cycle, Nigerians must rethink the real cost of education.

The cost of knowledge goes beyond school fees, yet many people do not understand this reality. They are misled by those who know the truth but continue participating in a broken system. Until people start questioning the true value of what they are paying for, many will remain trapped—paying heavily for an education that does not guarantee success.

While traditional universities charge high fees, many valuable skills can be acquired at a lower cost through self-learning, vocational training, or online courses.
